Ray Landis started collaborating with Steffen Peuker in 2015 with the intention of having Steffen play a major role in the next edition. Before passing, Ray handed over the bulk of the revision work for the 5th edition to Steffen Peuker and Jennifer Mott, both engineering professors at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The new authors are excited to continue the legacy Ray started with his Studying Engineering textbook.

The 5th edition is an updated and expanded version of the 4th edition. A new feature is the addition of dynamic QR codes for links mentioned in the book to make it even easier for students to access the wealth of relevant information the internet has to offer and the links will be able to be kept updated without updating the textbook. New sections on engineering ethics and sustainability were added. In addition, new and updated topics include:

  • Grit and perseverance
  • Ability, talent, skill, effort
  • Active learning strategies
  • Use of technology in the classroom
  • Effective learning techniques (based on latest research findings)
  • Test taking strategies and test anxiety
  • Stress reduction strategies
  • Importance of team work and communication
  • Research opportunities for undergraduates
  • Professional and career networking sites
  • Strategies for job or internship interviews
  • How to give constructive feedback

The new authors have added their experience, tips, and advice for students as well. All the new material is blended in with the existing material making the adoption of the new 5th edition easy and seamless for instructors who already use the 4th edition.

We look forward to continuing to work with you and provide a quality textbook for students studying engineering. Please contact the new authors with any questions. Desk copies (pdf) can be requested here.
